When winter comes and we start getting calls about furnaces that aren't generating heat, most of them can be linked back to irregular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace problems are not taken care of, your system could suddenly stop operating and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a few warning signs you can be on the lookout for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system quits working.

Furnace Age

The typical life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's a safe bet to start furnace shopping now. Buying a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make in an emergency. Give yourself a bit of time to look through and weigh all of your possibilities.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they get older and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been correctly maintained. Imagine the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that you could spend on a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last couple years of a furnace's life are when your system incurs the most breakdowns. Start adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the prior two years - a new system might be more cost effective.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any odd dings coming from your system? Furnaces start making weird noises near the end of their lifecycle. If your furnace is cycling on and off frequently or blowing chilly air, it's time to consider getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home efficiently. Your home can start feeling stuffy and any family members with allergies could notice increased symptoms. A few other indicators are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
